Bookish Wrap-Up

Happy weekending, book people. It’s the first day of Fall, which means lots of new releases this week. Also, if you’re reading via e-mail or the feed, come visit the site. I’ve been doing a little coding — the review list now has filters, I added in a Table of Contents for longer reviews, etc — and would love to hear any feedback. It’s also much more mobile-friendly.

I was out of town part of last week for a wedding, so I’ve had less time to read, plus I’ve been spending a lot of time fixing up the site. But I still squeezed in a few books, which is nice (click the links for the full review):

New from The Bibliofile

Book Review | The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson – This tells two fascinating stories of the Guilded Age — one about the construction of the 1893 World’s Fair and the other about a serial killer who ran rampant at that time. It’s a great book for lovers of history, architecture and true crime.

Book Review | Lethal White by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) – This came out this week, and I’ve been following this series so I knew I would read it. It’s the fourth book in her Cormoran Strike crime mystery series, and it’s the lengthiest one thus far. There’s an interesting and complicated mystery there with lots of character development, but the book feels a little bloated. I still enjoyed it a lot, but be prepared to have a little patience.

Bookish News and #bookblogging

A lot of highly anticipated releases are out, so this is probably a good time to visit your local bookstore:

Lethal White by Robert Galbraith / J.K. Rowling – This is the newest installment in her Cormoran Strike detective novels came out this week (Sept 18). See my review here.

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty – A new book from the author of Big Little Lies and The Husband’s Secret is out this week (Sept 18). It’s a mystery about a group of people who go to a health resort, but not everyone seems to be who they say they are…it’s gotten solid-ish reviews. (see TheresaSmithWrites or Simon McDonald) I’m guessing her fans will rush out to read it, but everyone else might want to hold off until they see what more people say. Nicole Kidman reportedly has already acquired the film rights.

Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon – Reese’s new cookbook slash southern living guide is out now (Sept 18). It’s mostly recipes and lots of photos of Reese.

Labyrinth of the Spirits by Carlos Ruiz Zafon – The fourth and last book for Zafon’s Cemetery of Forgotten Books is out now (Sept 18). I just recently read one of the other books in this series (Prisoner of Heaven), so I think I’ll hold off for now, but I’m sure I’ll read it at some point.
