The Woman in the Window Movie: What We Know

woman window amy adams movie release date cast

The Woman in the Window movie has been delayed, but is on track to be released in 2020. Here’s what we know about the Amy Adams-starring feature film:

What’s it about?

The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn a thriller about a woman who believes she sees a crime being committed through the window in a house across the way.

As a novel, The Woman in the Window was a surprise hit with a huge bidding war among the publishing houses for the manuscript. It was released on January 2, 2018 and hit the bestseller charts immediately.

Since then, however, there’s been a fair amount of controversy about the author, A.J. Finn, which is a pseudonym for Dan Mallory, who is a former book editor for Little Brown. The New Yorker published an exposé on the author, including tantalizingly gossipy tidbits like the allegation that the lied about having brain cancer and that he uses a fake British accent when he talks.

By the time most of this stuff came into general public knowledge though, the movie was already well underway by then.

What format will it be? Will the Woman in the Window adaptation be a Movie or a Series?

It’s planned as a feature movie.

Who’s behind it?

In August 2020, it was reported that Netflix has acquired the rights to the Woman in the Window movie to stream on its service.

Fox 2000 obtained the rights to the movie before the rights to the book had even been secured, back in September 2016. The book wasn’t released until January 2018. However, with the 21st Century Fox sale to Disney in 2019, the rights (along with all other 20th Century Fox assets) now belong to Disney.

Joe Wright is the director for The Woman in the Window movie adaptation. He previously directed other movies and book adaptations such as Anna Karenina (2012), Atonement (2007), Pride & Prejudice (2005), and Darkest Hour (2017).

The writer of the screenplay is credited as Tracy Letts, who also wrote the screenplay for August: Osage County, which had two Oscar nominations.

Who’s in the cast?

Amy Adams stars as Anna Fox, the main protagonist of the story. Other cast members:

Anthony Mackie as Ed Fox (Anna’s estranged husband)
Mariah Bozeman as Olivia Fox (Anna’s daughter)
Juliane Moore as Jane Russell (the neighbor)
Gary Oldman as Alistair Russell (the neighbor)
Fred Hechinger as Ethan Russell (the neighbor’s son)
Wyatt Russell as David (the subletter)
Brian Tyree Henry as Detective Little

When will it be released?

Currently Unknown, now that Netflix has acquired it. The movie has a release date of May 15, 2020. Originally, the movie had a release date of October 4, 2019, but the date was pushed back. Test audiences apparently were confused by the original cut of the film. They’ll be doing reshoots and re-cutting it.

The film was originally a Fox 2000 property, but now is a Disney property due to their acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Disney has been reviewing and retooling their new acquisitions, and it looks like this was one they wanted to make some changes on.
