If you’re wondering about whether there’s an adaptation of Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt in the works, here’s what we know about a potential Remarkably Bright Creatures movie:
What’s it about? What’s the plot of Remarkably Bright Creatures?
In Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, Tova Sullivan is a cleaning woman who works at the aquarium in Sowell Bay, Washington. She mostly works to pass the time since her late husband, Will, passed away from cancer many years ago.
The loss that really haunts her, however, is that of her son Erik, who disappeared when he was just eighteen and is presumed dead. Details of what happened to him are scant. Instead she mostly knows that a small boat with his prints on it was found washed ashore in Puget Sound shortly after he disappeared.
In the aquarium, there is a very intelligent giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus who knows more about the disappearance than he’s able to convey.
Meanwhile, Cameron Cassmore is a bright, but unstable young man who is constantly down on his luck. He gets a glimmer of hope in the form of a clue about who his father might be and sets out on following that trail…

What’s the status of the Remarkably Bright Creatures adaptation?
The adaptation has not been announced. As far as we know, the film rights have not been secured by anyone and hasn’t been optioned yet.
I’m so sad about this, since I would love to see this as movie. I think it would be such a charming adaptation if done right. Usually books that are this popular have the movie rights snapped up pretty quickly, but I think it isn’t the case here because of Marcellus.
I imagine that Marcellus complicates things because he would require a bunch of CGI which means adapting this into a movie would be an expensive undertaking.
But if you’re out there searching for this and hoping for a movie adaptation, please drop a comment! Maybe someone will see this and see that there’s a lot of interest in this book adaptation!
Remarkably Bright Creatures Adaptation Development Timeline
May 03, 2022 Remarkably Bright Creatures (novel) is released.
i’ve just started the audiobook, and I would be so excited to see a movie. I am already all in.
After watching a short documentary on Netflix about the life of a mother octopus “in which I shamefully cried and still have no idea why it touched me so deeply but it did.” I was so intrigued to discover this book. I have not finished reading it yet but I would absolutely love to see a movie adaptation of this story. I think it would be worth the risk and expense. James Cameron where are you when we need you. lol! Please please please make this a movie.
I would love to see this as a movie!!!!! It is a beautifully written book.
If nothing else, Remarkably Bright Creatures could be animated in my opinion. Possibly like UP? A cartoon for adults if you will
I am listening to the audio book and I have fallen in love with all of the characters, including Marcelus. This would be a wonderful movie, or even an animated movie. Please someone, it will be a block buster.
I would love to see Remarkably Bright Creatures on the big screen. It is a charming and lovely story. I am hosting my book club here today for 11 ladies, and I can’t wait to hear the discussion! Please make a movie of this story!
This would be a wonderful, well loved movie!
This book would be such a great movie given the right director–I’m thinking it has Tim Burton’s “Big Fish” vibes, or Zac Helm’s “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” similarities. Something Whimsical with a bit of fantasy at play. A heartfelt movie that’s fun and emotional
can also see it being a movie similar to “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” directed by Ben Stiller.
Great novel, I enjoyed reading it. The novel was very different from what books I usually read . I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Marcellus the octopus & his antic
Started the book last night and finished it today. Loved it and would love to see it adapted for the screen!
I would love to see this as a movie. This may be my favorite book EVER. It has everything…meaning, character development, humor, tenderness, mystery, reality and hope. So poignant and illustrative. Characters so real. And Marcellus is my absolute favorite being ever.
I think a movie version of this book would be great and make a lot of money.
This was read by a book club I belong to. The consensus of us is it would be a wonderful movie. Please don’t miss the opportunity to create a pleasurable book into a joyful event.
A lovely book. I would definitely go to see a screen adaptation.
I read the book and passed it around to others because it was so good. A movie would lift slot of people up during these sad days.
