From deadline: In The Final Girl Support Group, a group of women “have been in therapy together for decades – ever since one was attacked by a cannibal family in Texas, by a machete wielding maniac at summer camp, by an older brother who returned to settle scores on Halloween, by a lunatic who allegedly entered their dreams. These are the middle-aged survivors of the real-life crimes the slasher movies are based on. Some of them are addicts, some are in denial, and some have become motivational speakers. November 16, 2020 ‘The Final Girl Support Group’: Annapurna Adapting NY Times Bestselling Author Grady Hendrix’s Upcoming Novel As Series
July 13, 2021 The Final Girl Support Group (novel) is released.
July 19, 2021 Charlize Theron, Andy & Barbara Muschietti To Develop ‘The Final Girl Support Group’ Series Adaptation At HBO Max
I cannot WAIT for this adaption! I finished The Final Girl Support Group book in literally under 24 hours – I am an avid reader and it has been a loooong time since I honestly could not put a book down. The meta, the pathos, the heartbreak, the slightly unreliable narrator (I did love the Plan Bs and Cs), and a real heart and thoughtful perspectives all contributed to an outstanding book. (sidebar: the world (and special/practical effects) has caught up to Grady Hendrix’s incredible talent, and *everything* he’s written is being adapted, a la Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, etc.!) I am THRILLED to see this adapted via the particular team of Charlize Theron, Andy & Barbara Muschietti. Although Andy does have a LOT on his plate per his Wikipedia, this team – and Andy’s ties to Guillermo del Toro – give me confidence that they will GET IT and give us the movie it deserves to be. The new horror stories told from differentiating points of view get to examine what defines horror and how we in the audience interpret what is horrible. See Arthouse Horror and Elevated Horror – Hereditary, Midsommar, Get Out, The Witch, and anything made by Mike Flanagan. Not pandering to the male gaze or ridiculous plot holes or lack of character development. This adaptation team will tell the story with the meta reflection also upon you and I – eagerly reading their tale and watching their screams and tears; the watcher, the consumer, the constant reader – taking delight in the misery of others. As Grady states, the true horror is the marketing and business machines feeding off women’s pain (…and the inevitable sequels). If we “cannot wait” to watch it, does that make us monsters too?…
