Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart has a tv series adaptation that’s potentially in the works. For all the details about a possible adaptation of this novel, here’s what we know about the Shuggie Bain TV series:
What’s it about? What’s the plot?
Shuggie Bain is the story of Hugh “Shuggie” Bain, a sweet and lonely boy who is the youngest of the three children. He grows up with his alcoholic mother, Agnes, in the 1980s, in a post-industrial working-class Glasgow, Scotland. It’s a story about addiction, sexuality, love and the working class life.
Shuggie Bain was originally published in February 2020.
What format will it be? Will the Shuggie Bain adaptation be a Movie or a Series?
It’s planned as a limited series.
Who’s behind it?
A24 and Scott Rudin Production own the television rights to Shuggie Bain and have plans to adapt the novel for television.
Author Douglas Stuart intends to adapt his novel for the screen, which is based on his own childhood growing up in the 1980’s in Glasgow.
From Stuart: ““I am thrilled to be partnering with A24 and Scott Rudin Productions in bringing Shuggie Bain to the screen. I often thought of the book in cinematic terms, and the glamourous, calamitous Agnes Bain certainly believes herself to be the star of her own movie. This is a chance to show the city of Glasgow with all her tenacity and unsinkable spirit, and to celebrate the love and hope between Shuggie and Agnes.”
What’s the status of the Shuggie Bain adaptation?
The adaptation is currently early in development.
Who’s in the cast?
No casting details have been released yet.
When will it be released?
Currently unknown.
Is there a trailer or teaser available?
Not yet! Stay tuned.

I am reading Shuggie at the moment and I think you should invite Eve Myles to audition for the role of Agnes – the descriptions of Agnes bring Eve to mind in so many ways, both in appearance (she’s stunningly beautiful) and she is a top actress (Keeping Alice).
Loved this novel Agnes family and community ring true in a way I don’t think I have ever read before. Her pride, her beauty, Shuggie and his strength to endure, it made me think of the Power of the Dog in the way he survives the circling pack.
As I read this book, I keep hoping there will be a movie. It’s written so well, I can see it all in my head! Look forward to whatever gets made from this sad but amazing novel.
