Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides has a tv show adaptation that seems to finally be moving forward. For all the details, here’s what we know about the Middlesex film adaptation:
What’s it about? What’s the plot?
From Variety: “The story follows Calliope “Cal” Stephanides and three generations of the Greek-American Stephanides family as they travel from their tiny village to Prohibition-era Detroit, eventually witnessing the race riots of 1967 before moving out to suburban Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Over the course of the story, Cal discovers that he is intersex, tracing his transformation to a genetic condition that runs through the family.”
Middlesex was published in June 2002.
What format will it be? Will the Middlesex adaptation be a Movie or a Series?
It’s planned as a limited series.
Who’s behind it?
Paramount Television Studios have acquired the rights to Middlesex. The rights were originally acquired by HBO back in 2009, but it appears they let it lapse. This new attempt to develop the series seems to be unconnected to the prior project.
David Manson is set to pen the series, known for his work on dramas such as Bloodline and House of Cards. Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) is attached to direct.
The book itself was written without input or consultation with intersex people (despite the main character’s being intersex), so it remains to be seen whether the Paramount show will do a better job of trying to bring that authenticity to the project.
What’s the status of the Middlesex adaptation?
The adaptation is currently early in its development, without a network or streaming service attached to the project.
