Grey Skies, ARCs and One of those Weeks

There’s a chapter in Remarkably Bright Creatures, a charming and upbeat book that I read recently, about how humans spend too much time talking about the weather. But sometimes all I really need is a good book and good weather and that’s enough.

Of course, this week was cloudy and rainy and my dog is unhappy that we’re stuck inside. Plus, I’m having one of those weeks.

You know those moments when you see something on social media or somewhere that seems innocuous, but because you know that person, you know exactly what it means? I was sad, then I was irritated and then I was angry. Sometimes being angry is easier since I can still get stuff done when I’m angry.

And then it passed, and I don’t know what I’m feeling anymore.

So, it’s just one of those weeks. I’ve been reflecting on how we all end up being the sum of the decisions we make and the places and people that we choose to invest ourselves in. And I’ve been doing some journaling as well.

Bookmail & ARCs

Anyway, I’ve just been looking to get my mind off of things, and luckily, I’ve had some ARCS (advanced reading copies) come in the mail recently and digital copies to ooh and ahhh over. Always a nice surprise to receive book mail for a title you’ve really been hoping for when you’re having a bad day.

So, I thought I’d share some of the ARCs I’ve added to my reading list, and maybe some of these titles will interest you, too.

The Housemaid is Watching by Freida McFadden. I’ve been really wanting to read this one, thank you to Sourcebooks for sending it over. It’s the third (and final) installment of the very fun and twisty mystery-thriller series The Housemaid. Being published on June 11, 2024.

The Briar Club by Kate Quinn. I’ve really enjoyed Kate Quinn’s historical fiction novels in the past, and some members of the patreon have requested more reviews of historical fiction books. This one focuses on a group of women in a female boarding house in Washington, D.C. during the McCarthy era. Being published on July 9, 2024.

The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. A time-travel romance slash speculative fiction thriller, anyone? So, this book is probably one that less people have heard of, which is part of the reason why I was excited to receive it and include it on this list, since I love being able to introduce people to new books. The early reviews have been great and it’s been a buzzy book, so it’s one that you might be seeing around when it gets released. Being published on May 7, 2024.

The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley. A locked room murder mystery set at a grand hotel on the Dorset coast. I’ve had mixed experiences with Foley’s murder mysteries in the past, but I still look forward to seeing what she comes up with. Being published May 15, 2024.
